Roots & Returns

A Glastonbury, CT, community plant swap. Bring a plant, take a plant, and meet your neighbors over coffee on a relaxed Saturday morning.

  • When Saturday, November 21
  • Time 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Where 455 Winding Brook Dr, Glastonbury, CT

Growing roots, giving returns

Every plant on the swap table starts with someone sharing what they've grown. The "Returns" in our name is about doing the same for our wider community. This year, we're collecting donations for Hands On Hartford to help stock their pantry for neighbors in need.

Bring a plant. Take a plant.

No green thumb required. Here's how the morning works.

Bring a plant

Bring a plant, cutting, or seed packet to trade. Everything on the swap table comes from guests like you, so every plant helps.

Swap for something new

Browse the swap table, chat with neighbors, and trade for something new to grow.

Stay for the morning

Catch the gardening demo, grab a coffee, and let the kids plant something of their own.

A relaxed Saturday morning

Wander between stations at your own pace. Stay ten minutes or the whole morning.

How to Root a Cutting

A Local Garden Center or Master Gardener will lead a hands-on demo on growing new plants from the ones you already have. Bring your questions, and maybe take home a cutting to try it yourself.

The Swap Table

Set down what you brought and pick out something new to grow.

The Seedling Table

A small selection of starter plants for first-time swappers, available while supplies last.

Kids' Planting Corner

Young gardeners plant a seed and leave with their own starter kit.

Conversation Corner

Grab a coffee and a snack, and say hello to the Gateway team. No agenda.

Giving back with Hands On Hartford

Alongside the swap, we're collecting donations for Hands On Hartford, a local nonprofit whose pantry supports neighbors in need. If you'd like to give back, bring an item from the list below or shop their Amazon wish list.

Current needs

  • Full-sized toiletries, like body wash, shampoo and conditioner, and deodorant
  • Breakfast foods, like cereal, complete pancake or waffle mix and syrup, and oatmeal
  • Mac and cheese

Holiday needs

  • Corn
  • Boxed potato flakes or mac and cheese
  • Cake mix
  • Stuffing
  • Gravy

Every leftover plant finds a home

Any plants left over after the swap will be donated to a local organization, so nothing goes to waste.

Save your spot

It's free, and RSVPs are appreciated, not required. Knowing you're coming helps us plan for coffee, snacks, and the kids' planting kits.

Questions before you come?

Here are the ones we hear most. Anything else, give our Glastonbury office a call at 860-652-4360.

We encourage it. The swap works best when everyone brings something to share, even a small cutting or a seed packet. We’ll have a limited number of starter plants for first-timers, but we can’t promise enough for everyone.

Yes, it’s completely free and open to everyone. You don’t need to be a Gateway client to join us, so come as you are and feel free to bring a neighbor.

If you’d like to give back while you’re here, we’ll also be collecting donations for Hands On Hartford. You’ll find their list of needs above.

Absolutely. The Kids’ Planting Corner is set up just for younger guests, and every child can take home a starter kit.

It isn’t required, but it helps us plan for coffee, snacks, and the kids’ planting kits.

Feel free to park anywhere in the main parking area to the right of the roundabout.
