Basics of Medicare
Enrollment Periods
Most people who are on Medicare are 65 or older. There are some people who are under 65 who qualify for Medicare because they have certain disabilities. Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It usually covers about 80 percent of medical costs. What can you do to cover the rest? Take a look at these ABC’s of Medicare to learn more:

Medicare Part A — Hospital Insurance
- Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals
- Helps cover skilled nursing facility, hospice and home health care

Medicare Part B — Medical Insurance
- Helps cover doctors’ services, hospital outpatient care and home health care
- Helps cover preventive services
- You usually pay a monthly premium for Part B coverage

Medicare Part C — Medicare Advantage
- Combines Medicare Part A, Part B and usually Part D coverage in one convenient plan (you continue paying your Part B premium)
- Can cover extra coverage that goes beyond Original Medicare
- Medicare plans managed by private insurance companies

Medicare Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage
- Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs
- Medicare plan provided by private insurance companies
The enrollment period for Medicare can vary depending on the type of Medicare coverage you’re looking to enroll in.

Initial Enrollment Period
This is the period when you are first eligible to enroll in Medicare. It typically starts three months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after your birthday month, for a total of seven months.

Other Enrollment Periods
If you didn’t enroll during the initial enrollment period, other times you can enroll and/or make changes are:
- General enrollment period: January 1st through March 31st each year. Enrollment takes effect July 1st.
- Annual enrollment period: October 15th through December 7th each year. Enrollment take effect January 1st.
- Medicare Advantage disenrollment period: January 1st through February 14th.

Special Enrollment Periods
Sometimes situations change, and you might be eligible to enroll in Medicare (if you haven’t already) under the following circumstances:
- Loss of employer health coverage
- Move out of your provider’ service area
- Have Medicaid
- Quality for “Extra Help”
- Live in an institution / health care facility

Late Enrollment Penalties
Late enrollment in Medicare can cause penalties to be incurred. The following are the penalties.
Part-B: 1% of the current premium for each month you are late, up to a maximum of 10%/year.
Part-D: 1% of the average national premium for each month you are late, rounded to the nearest $0.10.
Enrolling on time is important. Contact me to get enrolled. Remember, there is no charge or obligation when you meet with me.
